Lincoln, Nebraska- Where my Dreams Went to Sleep

I woke up in a dark, and empty room, laying on the floor. More than ever before I was ready to leave this apartment, which had been occupied for the passed three months. It felt like I’d been here for the past year.

I walked out of the apartment to throw my bags into the car, noticing I hadn’t been up this early in awhile. The morning was frosted over, and the sun was just rising, the city just starting to receive it’s warmth. I pulled out of that parking lot, before the city was lit up once again. I wouldn’t let it be burned into my memory.

Parking illegally, sprinting down the street to grab a cup, and sprinting back to the car no one had noticed. I got into my car and left Lincoln, Nebraska.

Nebraska is a State mostly populated by Cornfields. And this time of year the corn has already been harvested, so the fields were now populated by cows, more cows than I have ever seen. Surprisingly these fields of cows did not make my drive anymore entertaining. But I didn’t really care, I was just excited to be leaving this state!

I know many people who would say Wyoming is no better than Nebraska. This is not true though, they are very different places. While Nebraska gives a “feeling” of being in the mid-west, Wyoming gives that overwhelming feeling of being “outwest”. Its an experience I thought I was used too. But Wyoming is far different then anything I’ve ever experienced. I find this has great value.

I am now in Cheyenne, Wyoming with my best friend.

Still dreaming, still thinking, still waiting, and still uncertainty living.

By next week I will be heading to Cheyenne, Wyoming about 500 miles away from Lincoln, NE. I’ve been in Lincoln, NE enjoying the small city, with its art galleries, coffee shops, and cigar stores…. No really I’ve been scrambling like I’ve never scrambled before trying to figure out what the hell im doing. I would like to think im the only one going through this. Maybe feel more “heroic” about it or something?

After I look around I see a lot of people dont have a clue what they are doing or will be doing a year from now. Some people do know what they are doing. I was one of theses people. But then something happened something that flung my hands off the scales. And now I find myself in a camp of a billion individuals who are asking “Whats next?”. Its expensive to live in this camp.

i’m gonna take a drive, gonna go find the place where the simple live.

Writing a Tune- Part II

Through the process of writing this tune I have learned a couple new things. Such as I love writing songs, I take my sweet time while writing, its easier in the morning to record what you want, and it makes for cool background noise to have your window open while recording, just to name a couple.

Writing a Tune

I tend to write music just to let it sit there… picking it up a month or two later and most of the time I ask myself-”Why the crap didnt I keep working on this?”

A couple of nights ago I decided to try and write something. But I wanted to be smart about how I did it. Writing can be a long and some times troublesome process for me. Sometimes I figure out the perfect way to play something, only to find I cant really remember how I played it in the last take. Well IF ONLY I had a device that could record for however long I desired. This way, if I forgot something, I could just go back for a quick listen.

Well to tell you something… I have a device such as this!

I’ve been writing and recording like this for awhile now, but not a lot has changed. These recordings find there way onto my computer a month or so after they have been recorded. Asking myself that same question “Why didnt I keep working?”

So i’m trying something new! By posting about this tune I started a couple nights ago I hope to keep a kind of record of the progress.

Fields and Freeways

There is this image in my mind.

A car, on a huge Freeway, with shadows swiftly flowing from it’s sides, wind sweeping road and dust away. The surrounding fields are robust, surely hoping to be noticed maybe have a picture taken… But most cars won’t stop.

Remembrance, wonder, and uncertainty are the passengers in this car.

Remembrance is full with talk of events passed. Wonder has this smile and keeps asking “Has this all been here this entire time?” to the fields and sky and road. Uncertainty cant stop asking “Where is this road taking me anyways?”.

The field speaks with a sigh “Oh… These travelers are only passing by. They have not come to live.”

Leaving the Hot Kitchen

Today was my last day at granny Judy’s Kitchen in Franklin. I’ve worked there just over a year now. I did dishes, busing, food, prep, and even cooking. Though it wasn’t the best job ever, I could say I’m thankful for getting to work there. Theres something about a place that community can be formed in. Most business’s don’t invite community. That wouldn’t make much sense would it? Community invites people to stay for awhile. Business, I think, tells you to consume as much as you can, as fast as you can, then kindly holds the door open for you, and says, “Thanks for the Business” (Never says “Have a nice day”). Where, if there’s community the consumer will have to slow down. The consumer will have to pay attention to the conversation. They’ll have to learn that a meal isn’t supposed to be shared the way “Business” is saying it should be.

I don’t believe my boss plans it like this, but he invites it. Today was coming to a close, just before two (when the diner closes) three parties walked in. I told my boss he should get a bigger sign that said we close at two. He told me he didn’t even have a sign for when we’re closed!

When I told him I was giving my notice. He asked me why. I told him my boss at my other job wanted me to work Saturdays as well. He replied “Ahh, yeah, see Jacob its all about the money.”

I wanted to tell him I loved my job here a thousand times more then at Market Basket. But that would have just proved his point, that it really was all about the money.

And that sucks.

I’ve learned a lot at Granny Judy’s. Who would have thought, a small diner in Franklin NH? Odd right?

I guess the whisper of community speaks a lot louder then the scream of Business.
